We bring together specialists from biology, AI, medicine and public policy to work on biosecurity.
Advanced language models possess broad biological knowledge and are capable of helping novices perform laboratory tasks to some extent. Meanwhile, narrow models trained on biological data have allowed scientists to create new bacteriophages with entirely AI-generated genomes, significant genetic divergence from known viruses, and high adaptive capabilities.
Many interventions that would improve Poland's resilience to biological threats can be implemented today. Stockpiles of personal protective equipment or modern epidemiological surveillance would help us deal with the next pandemic faster and more effectively than was the case with COVID-19. Other promising interventions, such as the use of far-UVC or glycol vapor for air disinfection, require further research into their efficacy and safety.
Most key problems in biosecurity are still waiting for people to tackle them. Poland has specialists whose skills and experience translate well to this field; what is lacking are pathways that would lead them to concrete work on biological threats.
